Play Selection needs your help!  Seeking Director/Play Packages for 2015/2016 Season by October 8.  Here’s your chance to “sell” us on your vision for a show you’ve always wanted to direct! Below is a message from our Play Selection Chair, Mickey Lund:

Dear Directors,

I wanted to inform you of a change that is being made to our play selection process.

As you most likely already know, when I took on the role as Play Selection Committee Chair, I wanted to develop a process and plan that took into account so many of the constructive criticisms of past committees, and work to select "good" plays where the personal opinion and motives of the selection committee were, if not kept out of the process altogether, kept at least at bay.

What has become very apparent, however, is that there is nothing about selecting "good" plays that is objective. Writing, just like art and music and live theatre, is purely subjective and based almost entirely on one's personal experience and without a clear charge from the A-Team, a consensus on what makes a "good" play and what makes a "good" play for The Colonial Players is, likely, impossible.

The A-Team has since worked to create a charge for our 2015-2016 Season that we will now use to guide the reading list and our selection process. That charge is as follows:

“Select a varied slate of 5 plays and 1 musical with a predominant number of women’s roles and/or are presented from the woman’s point of view.”

With a clear charge in place, we have reduced our reading list to no more than 30 plays and musicals from which we will select our top 18 by the end of October. We are also re-opening the Director/Play Package application process and want to encourage you to submit up to two proposals for plays or musicals that meet our charge with the hope that you might be able to “sell” us your vision of a play or musical that previous committees have held differing views on. We ask that you submit proposals for any play that is NOT on the reduced reading list. For a copy of the reduced reading list, please email me at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. Proposals are due by Wednesday, October 8, and interviews will take place in late October and November.

Upon completion of the interview process, the A-Team and Play Selection Committee will create a well-balanced slate of plays that meets the charge made up of any number of Director/Play Packages and any number of plays from the reduced reading list. Any play selected from the reduced reading list will be open to any director, with interviews for those plays taking place in early March.

Visit the Downloads section of our website to download the Director Play Package Application. Please submit all applications to me at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. by Wednesday, October 8. You will be contacted to schedule an interview shortly after the submission deadline passes. Should you have any questions about the charge or the change to the selection process, I encourage you to contact me directly at this email address, and I will respond as quickly as possible.

I can’t thank you enough for bearing with me as this process develops, and for contributing to the process by submitting a proposal.

Sincerely Yours,

Mickey Lund
