The Colonial Players is seeking directors for its 74th season running September 2022-June 2023. Prospective directors are invited to apply for any of the following shows:

  • Red Herring by Michael Hollinger, opens Oct 21, 2022
  • Coney Island Christmas by Donald Margulies, opens Dec 1, 2022
  • Tiny Beautiful Things by Nia Vardalos, opens Jan 6, 2023 
  • The Book of Will by Lauren Gunderson, opens Feb 24, 2023
  • Putting It Together by Stephen Sondheim, opens Apr 7, 2023
  • Ravenscroft by Dan Nigro, opens May 19, 2023

Please include the following information:

  • Name and complete contact information (email and phone)
  • Title of the show(s) for which you’d like to be considered 
  • Your directing resume. If you would like to include written responses to any of the questions below, it will allow us to dig deeper during your virtual interview; this is not required but is welcome.
  • We will start interviews April 27 and 28. If needed, additional times will be identified the following week. Please let us know if this poses a problem for you.

All applicants will be invited to meet with the Director Selection Committee, where you will have an opportunity to describe your vision for the show(s) you have expressed an interest in directing.  The Committee reserves the right to limit or consolidate the number of individual interviews based on the needs of the organization. Interviews last approximately 25 minutes.

Questions to be considered during the interview: 

  • What are the themes/messages of the show that you want to highlight in a production of this show?  How would you do that?
  • What should the audience take away from the show -- what do you want them to think/do/feel after seeing it?
  • What ideas do you have for staging this production in the round? What are the challenges, and how do you plan to overcome them?
  • What production/technical challenges do you foresee? How do you plan to address them?
  • Describe the casting opportunities and challenges you see.

Note: Director positions at The Colonial Players are unpaid.

If you are selected to direct a show, you are expected to attend our annual Season Kick-Off meeting for directors, producers, designers, and consultants. This event will occur in May or early June. The specific date of this event will be scheduled based on availability of the chosen directors and other playmakers.
