The Colonial Players is seeking directors for its 72nd season running September 2020-June 2021. Prospective directors are invited to apply for any of the following shows:

  • Red Herring by Michael Hollinger
  • Agnes of God by John Pielmeier
  • A Christmas Carol by Rick Wade and Dick Gessner
  • Maytag Virgin by Audrey Cefaly
  • The Lost Boy by Ronald Gabriel Paolillo

Directors may apply by submitting an email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. no later than Friday, March 6, 2020 with a subject line reading “2020-2021 Director Application.” Please include the following information:

  • Name and complete contact information
  • Title of the show(s) for which you’d like to be considered 
  • Your directing resume
  • List of dates/times between March 28—April 5, 2020 for which you are NOT available for an interview

Note: Director positions at The Colonial Players are unpaid.

All applicants will be invited to meet with the Director Selection Committee, where you will have an opportunity to describe your vision for the show(s) you have expressed an interest in directing. Interviews will take place late March to early April based on availability. The Committee reserves the right to limit or consolidate the number of individual interviews based on the needs of the organization. Interviews last approximately 20 minutes.

Questions to be considered during the interview: 

  • What about this show speaks to you personally? What are the themes/messages of the show that draw you to it most?
  • What should the audience take away from the show -- what do you want them to think/do/feel after seeing it?
  • What are the advantages of staging this production in the round? What are the challenges, and how do you plan to overcome them?
  • Do you foresee any production/technical issues? If so, how do you plan to address them?
  • Do you foresee any casting issues? If so, how do you plan to address them?

If you are selected to direct a show, you are expected to attend our annual Season Kick-Off meeting (for directors, producers, designers, and consultants). This event will occur in late April or early May. The specific date of this event will be scheduled based on availability of the chosen directors.
