The Colonial Players community theater in Annapolis, MD is in the process of assembling a slate of plays for our 73rd season (September 2021 – June 2022).  

This year, Colonial Players’ goal is to include plays that explore stories and themes focused on and relevant to the experiences of People of Color, feature significant and challenging roles for performers from these communities, and/or are led by diverse creative and production teams.

The slate will contain 6 main season shows, plus our traditional production of A Christmas Carol. Due to COVID 19, several of the slots are filled with shows postponed from Season 72, but we are also seeking new productions.

To that end we are committed to select as part of the slate a Director/Play Package (DPP) that helps us meet our goal. A DPP allows you as a Director to bring us a specific play that you would like to direct. In an interview process you would present us your vision of the show, and discuss ideas such as what draws you to the show, what you hope an audience will take away, and production challenges. 

If you are new to Colonial Players, please be aware we are theater-in-the-round with limited ability to accommodate flats or platforms above the stage level. Our closest audience members sit about 3 feet from performers on the stage level. Please consider these parameters when you are thinking of shows. 

Our play selection committee has been reading playscripts that we think will meet our goal. Some of the shows that we believe would work well for our theater are By the Way, Meet Vera Stark (Lynn Nottage), Fairview(Jackie Drury), and Skeleton Crew (Dominique Morisseau); if you are interested in submitting a package for one of these, we can provide you a review copy of the script.  However, you are welcome to submit any show that inspires you and helps us meet our goal!

If you are selected to move forward, the tentative plan is for a Fall 2021 production, though the final decision will be based on your availability. You will also be expected to present an excerpt at our annual Sneak Peek, typically scheduled in early February.  

If your package is not selected, you may put in to direct any other open show selected for the season slate. The Director Selection process for those shows is expected to begin in March 2021.

• Copy of your directing resume
• Conflicts November 30 - December 18, 2020. 

All of the above information is due by Sunday, November 22, 2020.  You are encouraged to submit as early as possible to allow the selection committee time to read your play prior to your interview.

PROCESS:

All directors considered for a Director/Play package will be required to interview with the selection committee.  Interviews will be held virtually and will be scheduled between November 30 and December 18, 2020. Additional information regarding the interview will be provided upon scheduling.
