The Promising Playwright contest was created in 1973 to celebrate The Colonial Players’ 25th anniversary and to honor the memory of Virginia M. Hefler, a patroness and member of the Annapolis art community. Entries to this biennial contest may be submitted between September 1 and December 31, 2014. The winner will be announced by May 1, 2015 and will be awarded $1,000 and a workshop weekend centering on the play and playwright. The workshop weekend will take place in July of 2015 at the theater at 108 East Street in Annapolis, Maryland.
To be eligible, plays must be full-length or one act and never produced. Cast size is limited to 10 actors or fewer. Musicals are not eligible. Playwrights must reside in states descendent from the original 13 colonies: Maryland, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, West Virginia, and Washington, D.C. Entries must be postmarked or received between September 1 and December 31, 2014 to receive consideration. Entries must be free of royalty or copyright restrictions, which would preclude workshopping or producing the play by The Colonial Players.
